Safe Staffing at Stepping Hill Hospital

All NHS Trusts are now required to publish information about the number of nursing and midwifery staff working on each ward, together with the percentage of shifts meeting safe staffing guidelines.

 

Safe Staffing


From June 2014 all NHS Trusts are required to publish nursing and midwifery staffing information on a monthly basis. The results are available through the NHS Choices website, as well as here on our internet safe staffing page.

Theses staffing results show our inpatient wards, excluding day care, medical assessment units and any additional capacity bed which are opened during the winter. The results are presented by each ward, showing the number of nursing and midwifery hours that are planned and the actual hours worked. These results show both by day and night shifts.

There are already a number of actions underway to ensure the safe staffing of our wards which include; staffing boards on the entrances to all wards showing the planned and actual staff on duty for that day and an innovative ‘open recruitment’  is held at regular intervals throughout the year.  A comprehensive review of all staffing levels, supported by evidence based assessment tools is also currently underway.

Some of our wards show that they have more staff on duty than are planned, so they are 100%+, this is because sometimes we book additional nursing or care staff to care for patients who need close supervision, or in cases where patients are poorly or acutely ill and need additional nursing care.

Where our wards show under the planned numbers, we always take measures to ensure that quality of care is not compromised. These measures are described on each monthly return of staffing.
