A fundraising mum will be running a series of major races to say thank you to the neonatal team at Stepping Hill Hospital who cared for her son at the beginning of his life.
Rachael Skeen will be running in the Brighton Marathon on April 12th , the Manchester 10k in May and Endure 24 in Leeds in July to raise funds for the Stockport NHS Charity Incubator/ Resuscitaire Appeal. This life saving state-of-the-art equipment will help babies breath and keep them warm.
Rachael’s son Alfie was born prematurely, facing challenges with underdeveloped lungs and other health issues. The family spent a month on neonatal unit, where Alfie received 24-hour care from the doctors and nursing team.
Alfie is now a healthy eleven-year-old. When Rachael saw the fundraising appeal, she felt inspired to set herself some challenges and goals to help raise vital funds towards the appeal.
Rachael said; “The incredible team of doctors and nurses provided not only exceptional care but also emotional support during some of our toughest nights. Their compassion made a world of difference, and I am forever grateful for their dedication. In honour of the amazing care we received, I am raising funds for Stockport NHS Charity to help purchase a much-needed incubator for future little fighters.”
Her fundraising will be going towards a new incubator which will help newborn babies needing extra support have the best possible environment for their start in life.
The Drager Babyleo TN500 is a state-of-the-art incubator, also known as a resuscitaire, which will help to enhance care for poorly and premature babies. It is smaller than standard incubators so it can be used as a travel incubator, giving easier access for both parents and midwifery team should a baby need transporting to a special unit.
Rachael added; “This is not just a personal challenge; it is an opportunity to give back to the community that supported us when we needed it most. I kindly ask for your support in this endeavour. Any sponsorship you can provide would be greatly appreciated as we work together to ensure that every child has access to the best possible care.”
