A Stepping Hill Hospital midwife is a finalist for a national award for her work championing breastfeeding.
Sarah McKie is up for the title of ‘Breastfeeding champion of the year’ at the MaMa awards, which celebrate the best UK achievements in midwifery and maternity.
Sarah has been promoting breastfeeding in Stockport for ten years, offering encouragement and advice to thousands of new mums. She works with local ‘champion’ mums who then support and encourage other new mums.
Breastfeeding is the healthiest options for most mums and babies, and reduces a baby’s risk of infections, vomiting, diarrhoea and obesity, as well as more serious illnesses including leukaemia.
Local breastfeeding rates have been consistently improving over the last ten years, with the number of mums still breastfeeding at 6 to 8 weeks increasing by 10% from 42% to 52%.
