Urogynaecology service receives top marks during accreditation

10 Nov 2021 - Press Release

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust’s urogynaecology team have achieved  accreditation for their services; and received top marks in the country while doing so.

The urogynaecology service, based at Stepping Hill Hospital, received its independent assessment from the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG), which inspects and accredits NHS services across the country.

Examining all aspects of care, treatment and aftercare, the assessors gave the unit a score of 95%; the highest achieved by a unit in the country to date. The service is now one of just 38 urogynaecology departments accredited across the country.

The urogynaecology service provides care and treatment for conditions related to the bladder and prolapse of the gynaecological organs in women, including urinary incontinence, vaginal / uterine prolapse and other pelvic floor disorders.

Among the aspects commented on by the assessors was the excellent team work and strong collaboration demonstrated by all members of the multidisciplinary team, which includes physiotherapy, urology, radiology and colorectal surgery. They applauded the high standards of clinical governance and the strong emphasis on research.

Innovative provision of sexual dysfunction management by physiotherapy team was commended. They were also impressed by the improvement in the rates of complex vaginal tears after child birth following the introduction of a care package designed to reduce these rates.

Dr Kapilmeet Kaur, consultant at the urogynaecology service said "We are so pleased with the outcome of the accreditation visit, which is a real testament to the teamwork of all members of the team.  We are all dedicated to providing the highest standards of care for all women who present with pelvic floor problems. We are honoured that the BSUG has recognised our passion for delivering high quality services for the women of Stockport and the High Peak.”
