The latest ratings show Stepping Hill Hospital in the top ten for hip fracture care, with 30 day mortality rates after hip fracture surgery amongst the best in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The National Hip Fracture Database (NHFD) Annual Report is compiled by the Royal College of Physicians, and assesses the standards of care in a patient’s journey. These standards include prompt admission through the emergency department (A&E) , excellent care on the ward, a high standard of orthopaedic surgery and anaesthesia, medical care from dedicated physicians in healthcare for older people, rehabilitation, and work to prevent further falls and fractures.
The 2019 NHFD Report names Stockport NHS Foundation Trust as having achieved low 30 day mortality rates following hip fracture surgery. Out of 175 Trusts treating patients with hip fractures, Stepping Hill Hospital was one of 13 hospitals named as having low mortality rates across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the best in the North West.
Professor Stephen Powis, National Medical Director for NHS England and NHS Improvement commended the Trust on its performance for being one of the top ten performing Trusts, and said "Older patients with hip fracture are frail and vulnerable and achieving a good outcome requires a high standard of care throughout the patient’s journey. Achieving this remarkable result requires dedication and skill from all members of the team."
Mr Simon Ghalayini, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Lead Surgeon for Hip Fracture Surgery at Stepping Hill Hospital said “We’re delighted that the latest NHFD Report has shown that we have one of the lowest mortality rates in the country and the lowest in the North West following hip fracture surgery. This is a testament to the care given to our hip fracture patients by every member of our Multidisciplinary Team and I would like thank them for all of their hard work and dedication."
