Two members of Stepping Hill Hospital’s gastroenterology team are making a mountainous effort to raise money for state-of-the art new equipment.

Clinical director and consultant gastroenterologist Dr Wisam Jafar and specialist nurse Rachel Campbell will be climbing Mount Snowden to raise money for the department’s capsule endoscopy fund.

The gastro team now use capsule endoscopy technology to diagnose abnormalities in the small bowel, where traditional endoscopy and colonoscopy tubes cannot reach. The innovative device involves the patient swallowing a pill sized camera which then transmits images to the team, helping them to identify abnormalities within the small bowel such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns).

The fund will raise money for a new data recorder for the system, which will expand the service by enabling it to treat even more patients. The team are looking to raise £12,000 for the new recorder.
