The deputy voluntary services manager at Stepping Hill Hospital has been honoured as a community hero in recognition of her inspirational work.

June Heywood received the ‘Community Hero’ award from Stockport Council alongside other champions who have made an outstanding contribution in their local area.

June has been deputy voluntary service manager at Stepping Hill Hospital for five years. She helps oversee the hospital’s 350 volunteers, who work as ward helpers, dining companions, guides, chaplains, peer supporters (breastfeeding and stroke) and in administration.

June was nominated by one of the hospital volunteers for helping her in her new role as a breastfeeding peer support volunteer. This volunteer had previously spent most of her time looking after her poorly child and felt very isolated and lacking in confidence. She said she was now far happier and outgoing thanks to June’s support, and was enjoying giving valuable help to new mothers.

June said, “I was thrilled and really proud to receive the Community Hero award. I just do my job as part of a great team.  I am happy to receive this award for all our volunteers and the work they do to support patients, their families and staff at the hospital.”
