Stockport School Nursing Services are part of the Women, Children and Diagnostics Business Group of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, and is also part of a wider integrated children’s service with Stockport Council called ‘Stockport Family’ which is an improved way of working with children and families in Stockport. The service includes health visiting, early help and social care services.

School nursing is a universal public health service for children and young people of school age encompassing the Healthy Child Programme 0-19 (2016). This is a nationally developed evidenced based programme which is available to all children and aims to ensure that every child gets the good start they need to lay the foundations of a healthy life.

We have a skill mix team comprising:

School Nurses – who are qualified nurses with an additional specialist public health qualification, which is recordable with the Nursing and Midwifery Council

Community Staff Nurses – who are qualified general nurses, children’s nurses or mental health nurses working in the community under the direction of a school nurse

School Nurse Assistants – who are members of the skill mix team with additional training to deliver the National Child Measurement Programme and support the National Immunisation Programme

Paediatric Continence Team – specialist nurses who offer support with continence issues for children up to age 19

Immunisation Team – skill mix team who offer immunisations in schools as per the National Immunisation Schedule

Our Expertise

We have a core offer for children living in Stockport or attending a Stockport mainstream school:

Safeguarding – safeguarding children is at the forefront of our practice. We compile health reports and share at Child Protection Conferences. We offer health assessments for all vulnerable children including those subject to a child protection plan and those in Team around the Child (TAC) where there may be health concerns.

National Child Measurement Programme (NCMP) – all children in Reception and Year 6 are offered a height and weight measurement. Children in Reception are also offered a hearing test. This aims to identify health needs early so we can support with early interventions if needed

Immunisations – we offer immunisations as per the childhood immunisation schedule. This currently includes HPV (Human Papilloma virus) vaccination for all Year 8 pupils and Td/IPV (Tetanus/diphtheria/polio) and Meningitis ACWY vaccination to all Year 9 pupils. There is no school nurse involvement with the Flu programme, this is managed by intrahealth

School Nurse Health Clinics – this is a confidential service offering support and advice to young people around lifestyle issues such as emotional health, self-harm, depression, anxiety, relationships, weight, puberty advice and sexual health. Young people can self-refer or we accept referrals from staff in school if they have sought consent from the young person and parents/carers if appropriate. We also get referrals from GP, Mosaic, Social workers and Hospital.

Continence – assessments and support around daytime and night time wetting and any toileting issues.

Looked After Children – we complete annual health assessments on all ‘looked after children’. This may be in school or in the family home. The parent/carer may not always be present but we always gain permission from them prior to completing the assessment.

Support for children with medical needs – we co-ordinate and review Individual Health and Care Plans for children with complex medical needs such as diabetes, asthma, epilepsy and Anaphylaxis or severe allergies. We offer Medical Needs Awareness teaching sessions for staff in schools, in line with The Managing Medical Conditions in School Policy (2019).

Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)– we offer RSE to all Year 9 pupils in mainstream school. This consists of two lessons focused on safe relationships, contraception, the law and sexually transmitted infections. This can either be done as a ‘drop down/off timetable day’ or as individual lessons.

Elective Home Educated – we have a named school nurse who for children who are electively home educated who offers support around health needs

Complex Safeguarding Nurse – The Complex Safeguarding Nurse (CSN) is a role that remains within the School Nursing Service. The CSN provides and analyses health information for the cases held by the Complex Safeguarding Team , primarily for young people who are victims or vulnerable to exploitation . The CSN completes direct work with these young people who often have missed health opportunities.

Youth Offending Service - we have a named school nurse who works one day per week supporting the health needs of children who are working with the youth offending service

How to Use the Service

Each mainstream school has a named school nurse who support children and young people’s health and well being to reach their full potential. In Stockport, we are commissioned by the local authority to offer children and young people up to the end of year 11 a schedule of health and development reviews, screening tests, immunisations, health promotion guidance and tailored support for children and families, with additional support when they need it most.

CONFIDENTIALITY

You can be confident that your child’s health records- both paper and electronic systems - will be stored securely and confidentially on our premises. Some anonymous public health data may be shared for local and national reports.

The services involved in your care will share information within Stockport Family to support your child’s developmental progress to ensure your child has the best start in life.

Please note that in some cases, where child safeguarding is a concern, information will be shared without parental consent.
