Information Management and Business Intelligence
The information & business intelligence function broadly comprises of four areas:
- Analytical team & Business Intelligence – acute & community
- Data quality and RTT validation
- Clinical coding team
- PAS & clinical systems management and IM&T training
About our service
The aims of the information & business intelligence function include:
- To supply information to support service change and identify opportunities for improving efficiency and / or effectiveness within Trust services
- To provide relevant information to the Trust's senior management, managers and clinicians to assist in their decision making; the monitoring of targets and provision of analytical and interpretive support
- To ensure that the Trust maximises its income under Payment by Results (PBR), through the accurate and timely recording of patient activity on PAS and robust reporting routines. To assist in dealing with commissioning challenges
- To deliver local and national information requirements in an accurate and timely manner and devising ways to help the Trust meet new government IM&T initiatives
Key roles in each area
Analytical and Business Intelligence
- Data management & provision of CDS files to SUS and analysis to support PbR invoicing, to maximise Trust income
- Continually developing PbR activity & finance reporting through CIS; financial forecasts and SLAM reporting
- Providing specialist information support and guidance to Business Groups and savings projects via link analysts. Projects include Outpatients, ED and Unscheduled care
- Integrating information from Acute and community services and standardising outputs
- Maintenance and ongoing development of Intelligence Board suite of reports on CIS, including integration of community services into the reporting suites. Develop and enhance the Trust’s PMS (Pathway Monitoring System) to monitor RTT access targets and provide guidance on improving 18 week data capture
- Design and implementation of Trust Board report to monitor over 80 national and corporate objectives, including MONITOR’s key objectives
- Supporting the Trust’s Finance agenda e.g. financial projections, patient level costing and provision of data for reference costs.
Data Quality and RTT validation
- Responsible for data validation and cleansing prior to timely submission of CDS data flows and returns to DoH and CCG's
- Deal with PCT challenges / queries re PbR invoices
- Maximise NHS Number coverage for patients
- Validation of patient waiting time pathways to reduce backlog and champion the 18 week access targets; assist in meeting access targets and in ensuring patients are seen in a timely manner
- Develop Community information services and implement CIDS data collection across all community services
Clinical coding team
- Key role is to assign procedure and diagnostic codes to all patients who are discharged from an admission
- The coding is the basis of the payments the Trust receives under PbR rules and it is imperative that all casenotes go straight to the coding department when a patient has been discharged to enable team to meet the monthly coding deadlines
- The team undertakes ongoing training and conducts internal coding audits to maintain high standards of coding. There is an increasing involvement of clinicians in clinical coding which is welcomed by both coders and clinicians
PAS & Clinical systems management and IM&T training
- Ensure system availability for users – PAS/Patient Centre; iPM
- Maintenance of security and passwords
- Provision of guidance and help desk facilities for iPM
- Maintenance of electronic ordering via PAS
- Implement new versions and features of software including exhaustive testing of software, to enable mandatory requirements to be met and provide maximum benefit to clinical services and patient care
- Delivery of a range of end user PAS training packages – e-learning and classroom based
- Support training in other IT applications.
