Anti-Racism Statement
The NHS is built on a founding principle of equality and social justice. Racism and discrimination are major drivers behind the health inequalities we still see today.
We recognise that systemic racism exists in our society and throughout organisations, cultures and ways of working - furthering damaging deep-rooted inequalities and injustices, and negatively impacting the lives of marginalised groups and communities.
Anti-racist means actively identifying and opposing racism. It is rooted in action. It is not enough to be "non-racist."
Therefore, we must unapologetically and purposefully identify, discuss and challenge racism and the impact it has on our organisation, our systems, and our people.
In becoming an anti-racist organisation, we are committed to:
- Proactively seeking out instances of racial discrimination and racism and we will take appropriate action where we find it.
- Listening to and amplifying the voices of racially minoritised communities.
- Ensuring equitable access to the services we provide, and equitable access to careers within healthcare.
- Ensuring career progression is available to all, and where appropriate, we will take positive action to fulfil this commitment
- Being open, transparent and accountable about our progress on anti-racism and renewing our efforts where progress is slow.
- Using our position within systems, networks and the region, to actively promote anti-racism with our partners.
We know that the implementation of effective anti-racism practice has huge benefits for our communities, our patients and our colleagues. We will Actively, Visibly, and Intentionally be Anti-Racist.
