Treble success for Stockport at the Student Nursing Times Awards

03 May 2013 - Awards

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed its national reputation as a nurse training centre with three Student Nursing Times Awards.

It was the only organisation in the UK to win in three separate categories: Mentor of the Year, Student Placement of the Year, and Partnership of the Year.  The Stockport winners were up against over 400 student nurses, trainers and mentors from Universities as well as NHS Trusts from across the country.

At a time when the role of nursing is under more scrutiny than ever, the event celebrated areas of excellence in training the nurses of the future.  The London event was attended by the Chief Nursing Officer for England, Director of Nursing at the Department of Health and General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing.

Stella Ross, a district nurse based in Marple, Stockport was announced as ‘Mentor of the Year’ for her inspiring work in tutoring student nurses. Stella qualified as a district nurse in 1992 and is described by colleagues as the most passionate and committed mentor they have ever worked with.

The practice education facilitator team at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust won ‘Partnership of the Year’ for their joint working with Manchester Metropolitan University, Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council.

The ward B3 team at Stepping Hill Hospital (a surgical ward specialising in bowel and gastric surgery)  won ‘Team of the Year’ for the learning environment the offer to student nurses on the ward, with evaluations showing they are always made to feel welcome and part of the team.

Practice education facilitator Jean Rogers was also shortlisted for a separate award in recognition of her continual professional development achievements.

Judith Morris, Director of Nursing and Midwifery at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said, “Good training leads to good care. We pride ourselves on the time and effort we put into ensuring the best quality of nursing training for both our hospital and our community services. We are thrilled that our staff have won these three awards, which is a wonderful testimony to their skill and dedication.”

Jane Cummings, Chief Nursing Officer for England said, “How we educate and train tomorrow’s nurses is fundamental to the success of the NHS in the future. Congratulations to all those shortlisted. It is a fantastic achievement and they are great examples of our future nurses and midwives.”

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust runs Stepping Hill Hospital and community health services in Stockport, Tameside and Glossop.
