Fast response - off duty hospital staff help crash victims

08 Aug 2017 - Press Release

Off-duty radiographers from Stepping Hill Hospital were on hand to help following a collision caused by dangerous driving in Offerton.

Friends and colleagues, radiographers Kim White, Claire Dooley and Daniel Keep, were having a quiet early evening drink at the Puss In Boots in Offerton, which is off the roundabout junction of Nangreave Road and Lowndes Lane.

No-one was expecting what came next - a car driving dangerously around the roundabout. The dangerous driver collided into an advertising board before hitting another car which he had overtaken. This made the other vehicle collide into a stationary car, which was carrying four members of the same family inside.

The friends rushed to help, entering the car to check on to the family. Two people had sustained neck injuries and the team were able to hold them and stabilise their injuries until an ambulance arrived. The ambulance took the patients to Stepping Hill Hospital’s A&E department, luckily their injuries were not severe.

Both the driver and a passenger attempted to flee the scene, but unluckily for them off-duty police officers were also drinking in the pub, catching the driver of the vehicle after a short pursuit.

Greater Manchester Police has commended Kim, Claire, and Daniel for their ‘professionalism and dedication’ during the ordeal.

Kim White said “The whole thing happened so fast, it was a real shock. I’m just glad we were in the right place at the right time to help, and I hope the people we were able to help are recovering well.”

Superintendent Stephen McFarlane said: “Kim, Claire and Daniel’s quick actions in an emergency were greatly appreciated by our off-duty officers and those who attended the incident. Thank you for your professionalism and dedication.”
