The latest November/December edition of National Health Executive magazine features an article by Amy Bowles, a therapeutic music practitioner with a weekly residency at our hospital. A regular musical residency of this kind is a new and unique project for an NHS hospital.
Amy explores how even extremely poorly and heavily sedated patients in ICU can and do respond positively to music. Heavy medication, lack of sleep and a relentless environment can lead many people to develop symptoms of PTSD and delirium and music has been shown to help reduce these symptoms. The music also helps busy and stressed staff to cope within a challenging working environment.
Amy says she is hugely proud of the work she has done at Stepping Hill Hospital ICU & NICU, and that she is very grateful to Stockport NHS Foundation Trust and the teams on the wards for supporting this innovative work.
