Stockport NHS Foundation Trust shortlisted for Health Service Journal Patient Safety Awards 2023

20 Jun 2023 - Press Release

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust has been recognised for its innovation and progress in improving safety for patients by being shortlisted for three separate national awards.

The trust, which runs Stepping Hill Hospital and community NHS services in Stockport, is the finalist in three categories in the Health Service Journal Patient Safety Awards, in the areas of patients supporting to improve their pain management, safely increasing rates of elective day-care surgery, and improving outcomes for mothers from ethnic minorities using maternity services.

The pain management team at the trust are shortlisted in the Patient Involvement in Safety Award category for their co-designed project with service users for patients living with chronic pain.

The project is helping the patients to develop the self-management of their pain in a way that best meets their own individual needs,  empowering them to make choices which will achieve the best possible outcomes for them.

The trust’s surgical division has been recognised in the Safe Restoration of Elective Care Services Award category for developing and implementing a new digital dashboard to support improvements in the number of patients who receive appropriate treatment in a day-case environment.

With close collaborative working from different staff groups, the dashboard has helped to safely increase rates day-case elective surgery, helping to reduce backlog of surgery caused nation-wide in the NHS following COVID-19 and lockdown, and reduce waiting times for patients as well.

The trust’s maternity department are shortlisted in the Improving Health Outcomes for Minority Ethnic Communities Award category for their response to the maternity needs of asylum seekers in the Stockport area.

The community midwifery team has been particularly responsive to the needs of this vulnerable group, performing with outstanding care and compassion, and the department has established close collaborative working with partners in Stockport in responding to their needs.

The projects have been shortlisted for the HSJ Patient Safety Awards recognising and rewarding hard-working teams and individuals who are striving to deliver improved patient care despite the intense pressures which the whole health and social care sector is facing.

Karen James OBE, Chief Executive for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said: “Ensuring the best possible standards of safety is a fundamental part of the care which we provide, and so we are greatly proud our efforts in this area have been recognised in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards. Being shortlisted in three different categories shows the many and diverse ways we are improving safety for patients in different areas, and in both the hospital and the community.”

The Winners of the Health Search Journal Patient Safety Awards will be announced a ceremony on Monday 18th September.
