A support services manager has been shortlisted for a national award for his outstanding leadership of portering services at Stepping Hill Hospital.
Joe Ryan is up for the ‘Leadership of the Year’ title at this year’s MyPorter awards, which celebrate the best practice in hospital portering across the country.
Joe has been the Support Services Manager for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Stepping Hill Hospital and community NHS services, since he came into post in 2017. His responsibilities including managing the portering service, as well as other areas which keep the hospital running, including security services and car park management.
During his role Joe has helped to revamp the portering service, establishing 24 hour manager cover, and helping to improve patient safety and flow. In introducing a new electronic porter request system he has helped to empower individual porters to choose their own workload and prioritise jobs themselves, improving both the service support for other hospital colleagues, and job satisfaction for the porters.
Around 60 porters work at Stepping Hill Hospital, providing vital support all year round to both colleagues and patients.

Joe is one of just four in the ‘Leadership of the Year’ category shortlisted from over 100 entries across the country. The winners will be announced at the MyPorter Awards ceremony in London on February 24th.
