Epic golf means epic donation for cancer unit

05 Sep 2019 - Press Release

Stepping Hill Hospital’s cancer unit got a major donation after a golf club decided to play an epic day’s golf over three countries.

Members of Marple Golf Club decided to take the Three Countries Challenge for their Captain’s Charity and play games in Scotland, England and Wales all in one day – that day being the Summer Solstice. They set off at 1:30am for in time for an early morning round at Powfoot Golf Club in Scotland, driving over to Hawarden in Wales for the second round, before arriving back home for the final game at the club in Marple, Stockport.

Other golfers were also playing on the same day, with a fundraising day in at the club including games, golf coaching, a magician and an Elvis impersonator. The aim was to raise £5000, but, working and playing together the club smashed their target and raised more than double – over £10,000 for the Captain’s Charity of Stepping Hill Hospital’s Bobby Moore Unit, which treats cancer patients.

Club Captain Mick McPhee has been receiving treatment at the unit himself, and Mick’s son Ray and grandson Dillon were among the six who took the Solstice challenge. Everyone at the club wanted to show their thanks for the treatment and care they have shown for Mick and all the other patients on the unit.

Mick personally handed over the £10,000 cheque himself to staff on the unit. Mick said “Getting a cancer diagnosis is like getting hit with a brick, but the care and support I’ve had from the Bobby Moore Unit has been amazing, they’re all angels. Handing over the cheque as a gesture of thanks has been a real pleasure.”
