A new hospital urgent treatment centre with expanded rooms and facilities is enabling Stockport NHS to improve their care for emergency and urgent patients.
The new urgent treatment centre, located next to Stepping Hill Hospital’s main emergency department, has expanded capacity to help staff respond to the demand on their services.
The centre has five new consultation rooms, allowing clinical teams to see patients that attend the emergency department (A&E) with minor injuries and those attending via primary care such as GP surgeries. The main contractor on the new centre was Warden Construction Ltd.
By redesigning inefficient, ageing estate and separating urgent treatment centre and outpatient activity, the new build has increased assessment capacity, improved patient flow, reduce avoidable emergency department pressure and enhanced staff productivity and wellbeing.
The centre follows the opening of the hospital’s main emergency and urgent campus which fully opened in May 2025. Since that time, the development has helped in improvements in how patients are directed to the most appropriate care.
Activity in same day emergency care has increased, helping more patients access same-day urgent care and reducing pressure on the emergency department. Waiting times have also improved, together with faster ambulance handover performance.
Karen James OBE, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust Chief Executive said; “Demand for emergency and urgent care in Stockport and the High Peak continues to increase, but we are responding well to this growing need with the enhanced facilities on our hospital site. Our new urgent treatment centre is helping us to further improve our capacity and provide people with the urgent care they need.”
