Stockport NHS Foundation Trust’s urology and learning and education teams have provided training for medical colleagues from across the North West in an innovative surgical technique.
The teams provided a training day on the prostate surgery technique known as HoLEP, which included VR simulations, as well as an opportunity to observe live cases.
HoLEP (standing for Holmium Laser Enucleation Of The Prostate) is a minimally invasive laser procedure performed on men with very large prostates who suffer from urinary trouble or are in retention of urine.
Advantages of the technique include reduced bleeding, faster recovery, and the ability to treat very large prostates regardless of size.
The trust introduced the training programme in late 2023, and is currently one of only a handful of centres in the north of England who provide this service, and the first to offer a HoLEP course for trainees in the region.
The successful course confirms the trust as a leading centre for NHS training in the North West.
