About Our Service

Welcome to the speech and language therapy out-patient service for stammering. You may have been recommended to see a speech and language therapist to help with your communication.


You may have a stammer which comes and goes dependent on what situation you are in or you may stammer all the time. This can have effect your life on many different levels. Through speech and language therapy, you can be helped to gain control of speech.

  • Your first appointment will take place in the outpatient department. The appointment is with a speech and language who is a specialist in stammering.
  • The specialist therapist will help you by finding out what happens when you stammer. You will be given information about your stammer.
  • You will have the chance to ask any questions in a safe and comfortable environment.
  • The therapist will advise you of the type of therapy that will suit your individual needs.
  • You may be given some easy exercises to practice at home.
  • With therapy, you should be able to gain control of your speech.
  • The therapist will also help you begin to gain control of your speech in all areas of your life.
Our Expertise

All the qualified therapists within the team are registered with the Health and Care Professions council.

The speech and language therapists are experts in the entire speech mechanism and the factors which impact on stammering. They have training in counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Speech and language therapists have specialist knowledge of many medical conditions including, stammering, Parkinson’s disease, swallowing problems, dementia, stroke and other neurological conditions.

Doctors normally refer any patient who they feel would benefit from the service, but you can ask about referring yourself by contacting us directly.
