Welcome to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics (OMF Surgery) The department provides a range of surgical and orthodontic services across south Manchester.
If you have been referred to us we will endeavour to provide the very best treatment for you.
Your dentist or GP can refer you to the Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery Department or to the Orthodontic Department.
The Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery Department provide treatment under general anaesthetic (as a day case), or local anaesthetic and IV sedation or simply local anaesthetic alone. During your consultation this will be discussed and agreed with you.
You may be required to have an x-ray taken on the same day, so please allow extra time for this. If it is recommended that your procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic you will be asked to attend a pre-operative assessment on the same day to confirm that you are medically fit to undergo general anaesthesia, again you will need to allocate extra time.
Following your consultation, a letter will be sent to your referrer (either your dentist or GP) with the outcome of your consultation and proposed procedure and you will be placed on a waiting list. You will be contacted in due course by our Waiting List Office, who will offer you a convenient date for your procedure.
Although treatment for head and neck cancer is provided at South Manchester University Hospital Foundation Trust, for diagnosis of suspected head and neck cancer your GP or Dentist will refer you into Stepping Hill hospital, through the urgent referral system to enable the Consultant to assess your condition.
Orthodontics
The orthodontic department at Stepping Hill serves the local population and the surrounding areas and provides orthodontic treatment (braces) for those patients with complex maocclusions including those with missing, impacted (buried) teeth and those requiring orthognathic surgery (surgical repositioning of their jaws) combined with orthodontics.
The Consultant is also able to provide advice to your general practitioners and specialist orthodontists in primary care. The department is also actively involved in research, audit and training of registrars. |
