About Our Service

Welcome to the Oncology and Chemotherapy service. We provide a clinical service to patients diagnosed with Cancer at Stepping Hill Hospital and selective Chemotherapy treatments. Patients that have chemotherapy treatment at Stepping Hill are cared for by our award winning unit and staff in The Laurel Suite.

Christie Consultants provide the oncology service on the main hospital site, this outpatient service is accessed by referral from Hospital Consultants only. Patients referred to our service will have been diagnosed with cancer for the following tumour sites; Breast, Lung, Urology and Colorectal. At the visit to outpatients, treatment options may be discussed and further visits may be needed to review patients care. You may see a specialist cancer nurse at the clinic who will also be on hand to support you at this time.

Some patients may have chemotherapy treatment at Stepping Hill in The Laurel Suite, other treatments will be referred to The Christie. If you have Chemotherapy treatment on the Laurel Suite you will have a new patient talk with a trained Chemotherapy nurse who will talk through you care in detail. The Chemotherapy nurse will see you at each visit and give your treatment.

Our Expertise

You will be seen by specialist consultants in their field from The Christie Hospital and your treatment will have been discussed at a meeting with a number of specialist doctors and nurses.

All the nursing staff in Laurel Suite have received specialist training in Chemotherapy and are assessed yearly. We receive excellent patient feedback on our small and friendly service.

How to Use the Service

Before your visit to the oncology clinic

You will receive an appointment letter to attend for a visit in the Oncology clinic; this will explain where the clinic is held. You may bring a friend or relative to this appointment and you may want to think of questions to ask the doctor, it may be useful if you write these down.

During your visit to the oncology clinic

The clinics may be very busy, so you should prepare to be in clinic for some time. The doctor will have a copy of your medical notes including results of any tests you may have had. The doctor will discuss possible treatments and help you decide the best way to manage your cancer.

After your visit to the oncology clinic

Following your appointment you may be referred for further tests or treatment either at Stepping Hill or another hospital. You will receive a copy of the doctor’s letter after your visit telling you what was discussed and the next steps.

Before your visit to Laurel Suite

If you are referred to Laurel Suite for treatment you will be given a leaflet and the Chemotherapy nurses will contact you to arrange a suitable time for you to attend for a new patient talk. This will be about a week before your treatment starts.

During your visit to Laurel Suite

The nurse will explain how often you need to come to the unit for treatment and blood tests and discuss any side effects and special care you may need to take. You will be also be seen by the oncologist in clinic while you are having treatment.

After your visit to Laurel Suite

When your treatment has finished you will still be seen by the oncologist in clinic to review your care.
