Cardiology specialises in assessing and treating heart disorders. We offer inpatient and outpatient services for a range of cardiac conditions.
The cardiac ward A11: inpatients with cardiac conditions are admitted to this ward. It provides facilities for cardiac monitoring (telemetry) and higher dependency patient management in the dedicated CCU beds on this ward.
The ECG department: this is the focus of cardiac investigations, and is where echocardiogram scans are performed and various cardiac monitors are fitted. All scans, including stress echocardiography, are performed by BSE (British Society of Echocardiography) accredited staff.
Stress echocardiography: all cardiac stress testing is supervised by a Consultant cardiologist and in most instances the results are discussed on the day, immediately after the procedure, ensuring timely and efficient onward management.
The Rapid access chest pain clinic: GPs can refer patients with certain categories of chest pain for a prompt assessment in this clinic. The anticipated waiting time to be reviewed in this clinic is up to 2 weeks from referral with patient-specific investigations to evaluate the cause of chest pain being subsequently organised.
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring service: our department offers highly specialised evaluation of suspected hypertension with national expertise in the area of blood pressure measurement, investigation and treatment, under the leadership of Prof P Lewis.
Cardiac Pacing Suite: this is situated close to the acute medical unit and provides a dedicated environment for our pacemaker implantation service. Both inpatients and outpatients have pacemaker implant procedures in this suite, with referrals being accepted from across the region.
A rehabilitation service is provided for patients recovering from a heart attack, coronary intervention, coronary artery bypass grafting and valve surgery. This provides a comprehensive counselling service, clinic and exercise programme. |
