About Our Service

Welcome to the Continence Service.

We currently provide Community Clinics at Abacus Children`s Centre, Adswood; Cheadle Hulme Health Centre; Gatley Medical Centre ; Heaton Norris Health Centre and Woodley Health Centre.  Morning and afternoon appointments are available.  Following a referral you will be sent a letter asking you to contact the service to make an appointment, we will alwways try to accomodate your choice.  If you are housebound home visits can be arranged.

When incontinence cannot be improved, we aim to assist you in the provision of the most appropriate product to meet your needs.

NHS provision of incontinence pads will be guided by clnical criteria.  If you do not meet this criteria, e.g for light urinary continence, or if you wish to purchase more than we can provide you will be given information where suitable incontinence pads may be purchased.

We run a home delivery service which provides patients with incontinence products.

Our Expertise

Our expertise and knowledge of continence will help you manage your continence problem. You can expect a thorough, individual assessment of your condition by a qualified nurse who understands how incontinence can affect your dignity and severely impact on your quality of life. Following a full assessment and discussion with yourself, we will implement a treatment plan designed to improve your continence or offer ways to mange your continence problems

How to Use the Service

We operate a totally open referral system, this means that you can refer yourself directly to the adult continence service, refer a family member, friend, or you can be referred to the service by your GP, Social Worker or any other health professional.

If you are housebound you may be referred onwards to your local District Nursing team for a continence assessment, although some patients with more complex needs will be seen by the Continence team.  This would be decided by the Continence Specialst Nurse when you are referred.

At your first appointment please allow up to 45 minutes for a full continence assessment.  You will be asked to bring a sample of urine and a chart which will be sent with your appointment letter.  Following this assessment a decision will be made about any future treatment which may include one of the following:

  • Advice about lifestyle changes and prevention of future problems
  • A regime of pelvic floor exercises
  • Medication to cure or improve your continence problem
  • Discharge
