About Our Service

Welcome to Medicine for Older People.  We offer specialist care for our patients aged 75 years and above, we have recently invested in purpose-built medical wards and outpatient areas for the specialty.

Your treatment or care can either be as an inpatient on one of the wards or as an outpatient at the Marjory Warren Unit.

Medicine for Older People

We provide inpatient care for older patients who come to the hospital with acute medical conditions. We aim to ensure that as many patients as possible can return home following their hospital stay. Inpatient care is provided from wards E2 and E3 in the Woodlands Unit.

Specialist Stroke Unit

This is located on the ground floor of the Woodlands Unit and is a Primary Stroke Centre and Hyper-acute Stroke Unit (HASU), bringing experts and equipment under one roof to provide world-class treatment. The HASU admits acute stroke patients from across south Manchester and parts of Eastern Cheshire.  People who have suffered a Stroke are admitted on to this Unit (or the sister ward B2) within 4-hrs of arriving in the Emergency Department. The multi-disciplinary team works together to ensure that every patient receives the medical, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, dietetics, social service and psychological support they require to optimise the recovery from their stroke.

Rehabilitation

It is not always appropriate to send you home as soon as you are better and if this is the case we provide rehabilitation to boost your confidence and independence; this also helps our staff decide if you require additional help once you have returned home.

Our Short Stay unit for Older People (SSOP)

Our Short Stay unit for Older People (SSOP) unit is a 13 bedded dedicated unit for the care the older person, when it is felt that discharge is possible within 2-3 days. The aim of the short stay unit is to deliver high quality, safe patient care, a positive patient experience and to facilitate an effective discharge from hospital within 72 hours.

Outpatients and Day Hospital

Our day hospital is on the ground floor of the Marjory Warren Unit and has disabled and car parking adjacent to the main entrance. The hospital has a friendly ambience for patients who are receiving treatments on a day basis or attending one of our various clinics.

Older people are more likely to have a fall or number of falls; we offer a falls clinic where you can be assessed and we will investigate the cause of your falls to help prevent further falls in the future.

Stroke/TIA clinics run every day, Monday to Friday. A TIA is often referred to as a mini-stroke; we ensure that you receive the appropriate investigations and treatments on the day of the clinic where possible, and advice and leaflets will be given to you at your appointment. Referrals to the TIA clinic are fast tracked from GPs and the Emergency Department to ensure that treatment can be provided as soon as possible following the TIA.
