A respite care centre for disabled children and their families has opened brand new improved bathroom facilities for its young guests thanks to local donations.
The Mayor of Stockport Walter Brett joined guests, families, staff and fundraisers including representatives from Stockport Asda at the grand opening of the new bathroom, together with the trust’s Chief Executive Louise Robson and Chief Nurse Alison Lynch.
Swanbourne Gardens, run by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, is the only NHS centre of its kind in the North West providing short breaks for children with learning disabilities and complex health needs, giving them a supportive, relaxing and enjoyable time, and serving as a support for their families and carers. Based in a quiet residential area of Edgeley in Stockport, it is currently supporting 30 local families in the area.
The bathroom is fully equipped for children with additional needs, including anti-slip flooring and bath chairs to keep them safe while bathing. As well as improved décor, the enhanced bathroom includes a ‘rise and fall’ bath, Jacuzzi, vanity mirror and light features, so that bathing is no longer merely a functional task but instead a fun experience for the children.
Many of the children do not have baths at home due to lack of facilities, so really appreciate and enjoy it when they come into Swanbourne and are able to have a good soak in a bubble bath.
The bathroom refurbishment cost £25,000 in total. £20,000 came from Stockport Stockport Asda in the form of a community grant, while £1,500 came from children’s community matron Heather West who cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise the money. Other fundraisers and the trust’s charitable made up the remainder.
Louise Robson, Chief Executive of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said “The Swanbourne Gardens team provide an invaluable support for families under great pressure, giving them and their children a much deserved break. This fantastic new bathroom is a wonderful new addition to the warm and relaxing environment which they create for their young guests, and I’d really like to thank Asda and other fundraisers for their generous help in making it happen.”
