How do I come for a Self-Request Chest X-ray?
- The service is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5 pm.
- You need to come to Radiology X-ray A reception.
- There will be an eligibility check and a registration form to complete (if this would be difficult for you, please ask a member of staff for help).
- As long as there are no issues with eligibility, the chest x-ray will be taken.
- The results are sent on to your GP within 1 week.
- You may be contacted via phone to come back soon afterwards for a follow up scan to check something seen on your chest x-ray.
- Or your GP may discuss with you if you need to have a follow up chest x-ray in about 6 weeks (your GP will arrange this).
- You will be given information about how to get help from your GP, even if you don`t have a chest x-ray.
- If you are coughing up blood, even if you do have the chest x-ray, you are advised to see your GP urgently.
Will I be able to have a Chest X-ray this way?
If you are registered with a GP in Stockport, are over 40 and have one or more of the symptoms below for at least 3 weeks, you can come for a chest x-ray without an appointment or a referral.
- Cough
- Fatigue (severe unexplained tiredness)
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain (if the only symptom, you must be a smoker or ex-smoker)
- Weight loss
- Appetite loss
- Coughing up blood (please also contact your GP)
If you have had a chest x-ray or chest CT scan, at Stockport or anywhere else, in the past 3 months unfortunately you cannot use this service.
If you are registered with a GP in a surrounding area you are not currently able to use this service (e.g High Peak, East Cheshire, Tameside, Manchester).
Please see your GP for help and advice instead if you are not able to have a self-request chest x-ray for any reason.
If you come to hospital via an acute service (e.g. the the emergency department (ED or A&E), acute medical unit (AMU) or medical same day emergency care unit (MSDEC)), you cannot use this service. The staff who assess you in the hospital must request the chest x-ray for you if needed.
If your GP has seen you and said you need to have a chest x-ray, they must request this for you. You must bring the paper form they give you when you come.
You cannot use a picture taken of the form to use instead.
Do I need to know anything else about coming for a Chest X-ray this way?
Certain people coming for this service may struggle to complete the registration form.
If you or the person you are bringing has specific communication or other needs, the staff will support you as best they can.
If the person coming for the x-ray does not have the ability to give their own consent we cannot do an x-ray this way. Please ask for help from their GP.
If there is a lasting power of attorney agreement in place (for health and welfare), the person who is responsible for them must come with the person for the x-ray. A paper copy of the document must be brought to show in the department.
If the person coming is from a nursing home, please make sure a member of staff who knows them comes as well.
