Sexual Health Service (GUM) - Stockport

Also available in Tameside & Glossop - Click to view

Our hospital and Stockport community services provide a combined sexual health service, called Stockport Sexual Health Services. We provide contraception and sexual health services in a confidential, non-judgmental way to meet the needs of the individual. Our clinics offer a friendly and confidential environment providing treatment and advice for all issues relating to sexual health.

Our Sexual Health & HIV Service (GUM) is now part of the community contraceptive and sexual health team (CASH) in the CHOICES centre located in Stockport town centre.

This ‘one-stop’ service will diagnose and treat all sexually transmitted infections, offer advice and provision of the full range of contraceptive methods, and provide more appointments as well as walk-in services with longer opening hours.

About Our Service

The service is linked to South Manchester University Hospital and the satellite HIV clinic is linked with North Manchester General Hospital. The service provides both doctor and nurse led sessions on a daily basis. Our aim is to provide an efficient sexual health service which is confidential, non-judgemental and appropriate to the client as an individual. Sexual health is important for everybody. Practicing safer sex and using condoms may protect you from sexually transmitted infections.

Our Expertise

We will ensure that your visit to the clinic is as quick and as comfortable as possible. Should any delays occur during your visit an explanation will be given. It is expected that most new patients attending will spend approximately 1.5 hours in clinic. Preliminary results of some investigations may be available before you leave the department, depending on the reason for your attendance.

How To Use The Service

We provide for the common sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis, treatment for genital herpes and genital warts, treatment for other genital infections such as thrush, advice on sexual health, testing for HIV and hepatitis B (if indicated), vaccination for hepatitis B (if indicated) as well as specialist treatment for those who are HIV positive.

All treatments provided by the service are free of charge and dispensed on site. Occasionally, if items are out of stock you will be given a prescription to attend the hospital pharmacy (free of charge).

All details of your attendance, condition and treatment are held in strictest confidence. Nobody will be informed of your clinic visit without your permission. If you are attending with a referral letter you can expect a reply to be sent back unless you indicate otherwise. All specimens leaving the clinic are identified by your unique clinic number and date of birth only. Your records are kept in the department separate from general hospital records.

If a member of staff sees you outside the clinic they will not acknowledge you unless you acknowledge them. Only in exceptional circumstances will confidentiality be broken. If this is applicable you will be informed. If you want more information on this matter, please ask a member of staff.
