Emergency Department (A&E) - Stockport

Contact Information

Emergency Department (A&E) reception - Tel. 0161 419 4108

About Our Service

Welcome to the Emergency Department (ED), also known as A&E. Our department is one of the busiest in the North West seeing nearly 90,000 patients per year from the Stockport and High Peak areas.

The department provides emergency and trauma care and treatment for adults. Children are treated in our Paediatric emergency department.

Many health problems can be dealt with by your GP and if you are unsure where to attend for any treatment, then please check with your GP or pharmacist, or call NHS 111.  More than 60% of patients do not need to attend ED but will be given patient information leaflets and advice.

Our Expertise

Our emergency department doctors have expertise with injuries and emergency medical conditions. Our department is staffed by expert clinical teams, equipped to provide specialised emergency treatment to give patients the best chance of recovery,  ensuring you get the best possible specialist care.

We also have a dedicated paediatric emergency department for children and young people per year. Children are seen by paediatricians, A&E doctors, emergency nurse practitioners and GPs in a purpose-built, child-friendly environment, working alongside the adult emergency department.

How to Use the Service

After registration you will be assessed by a registered nurse or doctor. The triage nurse will ask you about your health problem and assess the severity and if you need treatment in the department.

When you have your health assessed, you will be seen by either a doctor or an ENP; these are experienced nurses who have trained to be able to assess minor injuries and conditions.

The assessment of your problem should be relatively quick but may take longer should you need further tests or X-ray which take time to process.
Below are some of the other specialties you may be referred to:

  • Medicine
  • Surgery
  • ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat)
  • Paediatrics
  • Orthopaedics
  • Gynaecology
  • Obstetrics

Please be aware that we do not offer an emergency dental service in this department. If you are registered with a dentist and have an urgent dental problem, you should contact them in the first instance or telephone 0161 476 9649.
