About Our Service

Our hospital’s stroke unit is one of only three specialist centres in Greater Manchester, providing care for patients across the area.

Our service has recently expanded to offer more care for stroke patients, and our operating hours have been extended to 16 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our unit is located on the ground floor, Ward E1, and is a Primary Stroke Centre for the Greater Manchester Conurbation. People who have suffered a stroke are admitted on to this Unit (or the sister ward B2) within 4 hours of arriving in the Emergency Department.

Our Expertise

The multi-disciplinary team works together to ensure that every patient receives the medical, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, dietetics, social service and psychological support they require to optimise the recovery from their stroke. A physiotherapy gym and therapy rooms also support the patient’s treatment.

One of the treatments we provide is thrombolysis, a clot-busting drug that works by dissolving the blood clot and restoring the blood flow to the brain of the stroke victim. Our rates for treatment success and patients being seen shortly after arrival are well above the national average.
