A whole series of events were held during national Dementia Action Week at Stepping Hill Hospital to highlight support both for people living with dementia, and those caring for them.

The week began with an afternoon of free wellbeing, information and support for carers at the hospital. With support from the Stockport branch of the Alzheimer’s Society, there were also mindfulness, meditation and reiki sessions on offer too, offering respite and relaxation for carers.

Therapeutic and activity sessions, including musical therapy, were held for patients living with dementia during the week, with support from the catering team who provided a number of tasty treats.  Training sessions were also provided over the week to ensure colleagues were up-to-date with all the latest support and awareness.

Recent innovations in support for people living with dementia at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust have included a new therapeutic art colouring book which can have a calming effect for patients. Designs for the book came from staff at the trust and members of the public.  

The week also saw the re-opening of the serenity room at the hospital, which is a space for calm and relaxation. Decorated and with support material to aid reminiscence which can be calming for many with dementia, the room was closed during the period of restriction for visitors, but has now re-opened to provide an oasis of support in the hospital environment.
