A nurse who helps people to live healthier lifestyles at Stepping Hill Hospital and in the Stockport community has now taken up a new role promoting good health across the country.

Jan Sinclair, the senior public health nurse for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust which runs the hospital and community health services is now the national lead nurse clinical champion for physical activity for Public Health England, the national body which aims to promote health and wellbeing and tackle health inequalities.

She will combine her work at the Foundation Trust and Public Health England, supporting public health both locally and nationally.

Jan has worked as a nurse in Stockport for over 21 years, and has led on public health in Stockport since 2009. She helps to support people in healthier living both physically and mentally, in areas including exercise, healthy eating, alcohol reduction and stopping smoking. As well as the wider public she leads on initiatives to support the trust’s own staff as well, including with helping to reduce stress and improve their physical fitness.

She will draw on her experience to lead on national initiatives including the new ‘Moving Medicine’ resource which helps with activities to help alleviate symptoms in conditions including  COPD, heart disease, musculoskeletal pain,  dementia and diabetes.

Jan said “This is a fantastic opportunity to not only support the national clinical champions in getting people more active,  but also to support and motivate our local population in realising the importance and benefits of exercise on health. Just by simply walking more at a faster pace for 10 minutes a day you can make a real difference, and we want to help more people achieve this.”
