Specialist palliative care service shortlisted for two Student Nursing Times Awards

06 Apr 2022 - Press Release

Outstanding training for nursing staff caring for people who are near the end of life has been recognised with a shortlisting for two separate national awards.

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust’s Specialist Palliative Care Service are up for Student Nursing Times Awards in two categories; both ‘Hospital Placement of the Year’, and ‘Community Placement of the Year.’

The team offer the training and support nursing students and learners need as they prepare to provide the best possible care for those who are dying,  or nearing the end of life. Compassion in such care is always of the greatest importance, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has underlined its importance even further.

They give their colleagues the skills they require in managing challenging conversations, advance care planning, managing complex symptoms, and supporting families in their grief. They ensure colleagues learn this expertise in a supportive and gentle environment, with the full resources which they need.

Those receiving training include trainee nursing associates, preceptees, and student nurses on placement from universities. The two separate awards show the team have been providing excellent learning both for trainee colleagues working at Stepping Hill Hospital, and also NHS services in the Stockport community.

Nic Firth, Chief Nurse for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust said “Providing compassionate support and treatment for those nearing the end of life is a vital part of a nurse’s role: it is a privilege to be able to ensure both the patients and their loved ones receive the care they deserve. Our Specialist Palliative Care team provide truly excellent support in teaching these skills. It is wonderful to see they have been recognised at the Student Nursing Times Awards and I wish them all the very best.”

The Student Nursing Times Awards winners will be announced in a ceremony at the  Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London on May 27th.
