National award shortlisting for bowel cancer nurse

07 Sep 2020 - Press Release

A Stockport nurse specialist has been shortlisted for a national award for the positive impact her leadership has had on both bowel cancer patients and her colleagues.

Doreen Dooley, a colorectal clinical nurse specialist based at Stepping Hill Hospital has been nominated and subsequently shortlisted for the Bowel Cancer UK Gary Logue award, the charity`s award for those who have gone above and beyond in their delivery of care.

Doreen has led the coloproctological nursing service at the hospital for the past 21 years. She is at the heart of training and supporting nurses into specialist roles and introduced nurse-led clinics to support patients with colorectal cancers, providing them with the high quality personalised care they need.

During the coronavirus lockdown Doreen has ensured patients still received close contact and care during a doubly worrying time for them.

She has been described by colleagues as bringing `a considered and thoughtful approach to leadership but equally a willingness to learn. Her honesty, friendly and considerate nature are qualities that make her a natural leader. The health and well-being of her team and their general happiness are always at the forefront of every decision she makes.`

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust Interim Chief Nurse Bev Tabernacle, said  "In the short time I have been with the Trust I have learnt that Doreen has proven to be an excellent leader of our coloproctological nursing service.  Over the years with the trust she has demonstrated compassionate leadership overall, however has particularly demonstrated this during the coronavirus pandemic and has been an inspiration for her colleagues. I wish her well on receiving the Bowel Cancer UK Gary Logue award which would be very well deserved."

The winners will be announced at a Bowel Cancer UK virtual event on Wednesday 16th  September.
