Training team recognised for Excellence in Patient Care

29 Apr 2020 - Press Release

A training team based at Stepping Hill Hospital are up for a top national award for their outstanding work in supporting gastroenterology and other clinical teams.

The clinical simulation team have been shortlisted for the Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care Awards in the ‘Medical Education and Training’ category.

The team create simulated clinical environments using manikin ‘dummy’ patients and the latest technology, allowing them to identify at the training stage any system or procedural errors which may otherwise go unnoticed, and improving patient safety.

With the gastroenterology department who treat conditions around the digestive tract, they have also been involved with training around non technical skills including communication, leadership and teamworking. More recently this has expanded to include cardiology, diabetes and emergency department (A&E) teams too.

Working with different disciplines including consultants, nurses, advanced clinical practitioners and healthcare assistants, they have helped prepare every member of the team to perform well in high pressure environments.

The Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care Awards celebrate the best in patient care across the country. Unfortunately, due to Covid19, the college have had to cancel the awards ceremony due to be held in London on 19th May,  but instead they will be hosting a week of virtual announcements and celebrations on their social media channels and online.

Colin Wasson, Medical Director for Stockport NHS Foundation Trust which runs Stepping Hill Hospital and community NHS services said “Clinical simulation is a vital part of ensuring patient safety, and our team carry this out with great innovation and professionalism. I’m delighted they’ve been recognised by the Royal College of Physicians in their Excellence in Patient Care awards.”
