Nutrition and Dietetics Service - Kingsgate House

The hospital dietitians (acute service) are based at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport.

About Our Service

Hospital (Acute) service

  • In the hospital Dietitians visit the medical and surgical wards to see inpatients that have been referred with specific nutritional concerns. Advice can be provided for during the admission and for home, if required
  • There are outpatient clinics held at the hospital for specialist dietary advice

Community Service

  • Patients are referred by GPs/Specialist Nurses/ District Nurses/ Dietitians. The Community Dietitians assess and provide individual dietary advice to patients in their own homes or in clinics around the borough
  • The Community Department provide assessment and equipment for adults and children who are registered with a Stockport GP and receive enteral tube feeding

All Dietitians are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council

Dietitians can assess, diagnose and treat diet and nutrition problems for individuals using the most up-to-date public health and scientific research on food, health and disease. Dietitians translate this into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices. Dietitians work within multi-disciplinary teams and are involved in the training and support of other healthcare professionals

We provide a wide range of dietary treatments in many specialist areas. These include:

  • Nutrition Support (for undernutrition)
  • Tube feeding advice and management
  • Parenteral (IV) feeding
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease/Ulcerative colitis)
  • Coeliac Disease
  • Digestive disorders
  • Diabetes
How to Use the Service

Hospital (acute) service:

  • Ward staff will refer you to the service as an inpatient- this may be due to weight loss, low body mass index (BMI) or poor dietary intake. It may also be if you require feeding artificially (not by mouth) due to your clinical condition. Please speak to the staff on the ward if you have any concerns about your food intake or nutritional status
  • If you are seen as an outpatient by a Consultant or Specialist Nurses and need to be seen by a Dietitian, they may refer to the Acute Dietitians who will contact you with appointment details for Stepping Hill Hospital.

Community service

  • Our service is available for patients registered with a Stockport GP aged 18 or over
  • A referral is needed from either your GP, consultant, Specialist Nurse or District Nurse
  • If the referral is clinically appropriate, the department will then send you a letter with details of how to organise an appointment
