About Our Service

Our haematology service (including haemostasis and thrombosis) is the study of the blood and blood-forming tissues. Haematology is a form of healthcare science that plays a major role in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with disorders of the blood and bone marrow.

 

Our haematology service looks after patients with a variety of blood disorders both malignant and non-malignant. The main service delivery areas are the day case unit where patients are offered a variety of treatments and our outpatient clinics. In addition the haematology team provide in reach to inpatients with haematological conditions.

Our Expertise

The service is consultant-led and supported by a haematology specialist nurse. 

Our staff play a major role in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients with disorders of the blood and bone marrow, for example:

  • anaemia
  • haemophilia
  • leukaemia and related blood cancers
  • sickle cell disease
  • other bleeding and clotting problems.

At Stepping Hill Hospital our haematology service provides a blood transfusion science, and is responsible for ascertaining blood group status, and for the provision of appropriate blood and its components. Some of our staff also work in our blood science laboratory with other colleagues working with similar technologies for clinical chemistry and immunological investigations.
