About Our Service

Welcome to the General Surgical service. Our dynamic team of surgeons provides a comprehensive range of services for the vast majority of general surgical conditions.

The General Surgical emergency and elective service is provided on our Stepping Hill Hospital site with only a few exceptions (3 clinics in Buxton per month, and our elective major upper gastrointestinal cancer surgery is performed by our surgeons at the Manchester Royal Infirmary).

Our team of 10 Consultant Surgeons is supported by a team of junior doctors, specialist cancer nurses, nurse clinicians, secretaries and admissions officers.

We offer a 24-hour emergency general surgical service with dedicated emergency theatre lists 7 days a week.

We provide a wide range of planned day-case and inpatient surgery, including laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures, within general surgery and the following sub-specialities: breast surgery, colorectal surgery, upper gastro-intestinal surgery and paediatric surgery.

The general surgical elective inpatient beds are located on wards B3 and B6. There is a 17 bedded emergency surgical/urology assessment unit (ward C3). Patients having planned daycase or overnight-stay operations will usually attend either ward D5 or the Short Stay Unit.

Outpatient clinics are held mainly in the Bobby Moore Unit at Stepping Hill and in Outpatients A. 3 outpatient clinics are held each month in Buxton and all paediatric surgical clinics are held in the Tree House Children’s Unit.

Our Expertise

Breast Surgery

A full range of breast surgery is undertaken by two consultants, including breast reconstruction.

Colorectal Surgery

Five consultants provide services for benign and malignant colorectal conditions. Colorectal cancer patients are treated with both open and keyhole surgery using the Enhanced Recovery Programme postoperatively.

Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery

Three consultants cover all aspects of stomach and oesophagus cancer management with major surgery taking place at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. Benign procedures, including gall bladder and acid reflux operations, are carried out at Stepping Hill.

Paediatric Surgery

Paediatric surgical services are offered by one consultant from Stepping Hill and two consultants from the Children’s Hospital.

How to Use the Service

To access our planned services we will require a referral form from your GP. Following receipt and acceptance of your referral, the Outpatient booking team will either telephone you to agree an appointment, or will send you an appointment letter in the post.

Our emergency services are usually accessed following attendance at the Emergency Department or via a referral from your GP to our Surgical Assessment Unit (ward C3).

Patients will be given a leaflet relevant to their condition/surgery at their outpatient appointment with the surgical team or at the pre-op assessment clinic.
