We are situated on the third floor of the Women’s Unit at Stepping Hill hospital

Visiting times

Partners are welcome from 9am–9pm and patient’s own children. 
Other children are not admitted.
Visiting three per bed please 2-3.30pm in the afternoon, 7-8pm in the evening.

Welcome to the Stockport Birth Centre web page.  Our birth centre provides a calm, friendly and homely environment for low-risk women and their families. You can explore our maternity services by viewing our virtual tours.

Our midwifery-led birth centre is situated within Stepping Hill Hospital and is open to all low-risk women.  We have four delivery rooms three of which have birthing pools.  We encourage you to bring with you anything that would make you feel more relaxed, your own music for example.  Dimmed lighting and aromatherapy oils can also help maintain a relaxed atmosphere.

We offer a supportive environment where you labour, give birth and you and your birth partner can get to know your baby.  You can go home after the birth or stay longer in our four bedded bay if needed for support with feeding and parenting skills.

This unit is staffed by a mix of hospital based and community midwives supported by midwifery assistants.

• You can book your care through your local midwife (your GP’s surgery can direct you to this service) or telephone our Triage department on 0161 419 5551 for information.
• Tours of our maternity unit including the birth centre are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings meet in reception Women’s Unit at 6.30pm.
• Should you be considered ‘high risk’ and wish to consider using the birth centre you should discuss this with your midwife/obstetric doctor.  Alternatively you can contact a Supervisor of Midwives to discuss this.  Telephone switchboard on 0161 483 1010 and they will direct you to the supervisor of midwives.
