Region`s NHS leader visits Stepping Hill Hospital

19 Jun 2017 - Press Release
Jon Rouse with chief executive Ann Barnes and service leads in the emergency (A&E) department

The leader of health and social care services in Greater Manchester has visited emergency, stroke and other services at Stepping Hill Hospital to see new initiatives for improved patient care.

Jon Rouse, chief officer for the Greater Manchester Strategic Health partnership was accompanied by chief executive Ann Barnes, as he toured the hospital talking to staff.

The hospital’s stroke unit has been ranked as one of the best in the country. A new stroke support unit is also giving specialist care to people suffering a ‘mini-stroke’.

As well as visiting the main emergency (A&E) department, which played a key part in receiving victims from the Manchester Arena attack in May, Jon Rouse saw the new ambulatory illness and ambulatory care units next to the emergency department which now see patients with less urgent conditions.

He also saw the state-of-the-art acute medical unit which opened last year, where poorly patients are transferred after A&E, and the new transfer hub where community and mental health nurses, social workers and Age UK placement officers  work together to ensure  safe discharge from hospital.

Stepping Hill Hospital has been struggling to meet the national A&E four hour target due to an increasing number of frail, elderly patients coming through its doors. However,  with the help of the new hospital’s new units and integration of discharge care, this has improved significantly in recent weeks.

Jon Rouse said, “We need to adapt health and social care services to meet the  changing needs of our population, and what I saw at Stepping Hill Hospital was a great deal of innovation and cooperation in developing  services for the future.”
