A new kind of healthcare worker in Stepping Hill Hospital and the community have celebrated a successful first year of training.
Trainee Nursing Associates (TNAs) were recruited from existing healthcare assistants as part of a national pilot scheme to provide a new caring role, bridging the gap between support workers and registered nurses. They work alongside these colleagues to deliver hands-on care, focusing on ensuring patients getting the compassionate care they deserve.
At the end of the training, the trainee will have enhanced skills in areas such as wound dressings and patient observations, which will help support the team provide excellent bedside patient care. They receive training on the job whilst also spending one day a week at university. 14 TNAs have been working in both medical and surgical wards at Stepping Hill Hospital, and also community settings such as health centres, with good feedback from both patients and other staff members.
The TNAs are now starting their second year of training, while a new set of trainees are set to be recruited soon.
